Privacy Policy

Last updated: April 18, 2026

Worldex Lab, Inc. ("Worldex Lab," "we," "us") makes Dex — the language discovery camera for children ages 3–8 — and the Dex parent app (together, the "Services"). We believe it's important to be clear and transparent about how we handle your family's information, and we've written this policy in plain language so it's actually useful to read.

If we update this policy in a way that affects how we use your data, we'll let you know by email and in-app notice at least 7 days before the change takes effect.

A note about children's privacy

Dex is designed for young children, and protecting their privacy is our top priority. We comply fully with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). Here's what that means in practice:

•  Parents and guardians create the account and set everything up through the Dex parent app. Children do not register for accounts or provide us with personal information directly.

•  Dex does not give children access to the open internet, and it does not allow them to share personal information with anyone outside the device.

•  We do not show ads to children and we do not use their data for marketing of any kind.

•  We do not collect sensitive information such as your child's location, health data, or biometric identifiers.

When you set up Dex

To use Dex, a parent or guardian needs to download the Dex parent app and create an account. When you do this, we collect your email address, a password, and your consent record. We also ask for a first name or nickname for your child, their approximate age, and their starting language level — this is what allows Dex to tailor the experience to the right age group and difficulty.

We also wanted to tell you:

•  Your password is stored as a hash — we cannot see it in plain text.

•  Your child's profile is encrypted in our cloud and used only to personalize their experience. It is never used for advertising or shared with third parties for marketing.

•  You can update or delete your child's profile at any time from within the Dex parent app.

When your child uses Dex

Dex is designed to collect as little data as possible while still doing its job. Here's what happens when your child uses the device:

Photos. When your child takes a photo, it's sent to OpenAI Vision to identify the object and return the word in your chosen language. The image is deleted immediately after the label is returned, and is not used for model training — we do not store a copy on our servers unless you specifically turn on Cloud Media Storage in the Dex parent app.

Voice. When your child speaks during flashcard or story activities, their voice is processed in real time to check pronunciation. By default, this happens through OpenAI Whisper, and the audio is deleted the moment it's been transcribed — it's never stored or used for model training. If you prefer, you can switch to on-device processing only in your settings, which means no audio ever leaves the camera.

Usage data. We collect basic usage data — things like button taps, timestamps, and error codes — to help us understand how Dex is being used and to fix problems. This data is stored for up to 30 days and then deleted or anonymized. It is not linked to your child's name or profile.

Network data. We collect LTE usage data through Soracom, our cellular provider, for billing and connectivity monitoring. This is stored for up to 12 months.

•  None of the data collected during your child's use of Dex is sold to or shared with advertisers.

•  OpenAI Whisper and OpenAI Vision are contractually barred from retaining child data or using it to train their models.

•  The only people at Worldex Lab who can access usage data are engineers and support staff who need it to keep the product running — and all access is logged and requires multi-factor authentication.

Optional settings you control

Two features in Dex are switched off by default and require your explicit opt-in:

Cloud Media Storage. If you turn this on, photos and voice clips your child creates are saved to our cloud rather than being deleted immediately. You can browse and delete this content at any time from within the Dex parent app.

Help Dex Improve. If you turn this on, you authorize background-checked Worldex Lab engineers to review a limited sample of your child's stored media — strictly for quality assurance and improving the product. Stored data is automatically deleted after 90 days, and you can turn this off or delete everything at any time.

If both of these settings remain off — which is the default — no voice recording stays on our servers for longer than the milliseconds needed to process it in real time, and no photos are retained.

Who we share your information with

Worldex Lab does not sell your personal information. We work with a small number of trusted service providers who help us operate the Services. All of them are contractually required to protect your data and use it only for the specific purpose we've hired them for.

•  Azure: Process speech for pronunciation activities. Audio is not retained or used for model training.

•  OpenAI: Identify objects from photos. Images are deleted immediately after the word is returned, and not used for model training.

•  ElevenLabs: Provide voice narration in the app. No child data is involved.

•  Soracom: Manage cellular connectivity for the device. They only see network usage totals — no child content.

We may also disclose information where required by law, or to protect the safety and security of our users and services. In the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of our business, your data may be transferred as part of that transaction.

Your rights as a parent

Under COPPA, you have the right to review, correct, and delete the personal information we've collected about your child at any time. You can also withdraw your consent to any optional feature, and refuse to allow us to collect any further information.

To exercise any of these rights, you can manage most things directly in the Dex parent app. For anything else — including a full account deletion — email us at privacy@dex.camera. We'll verify your identity using your account credentials before taking any action. Deletion requests are processed within 14 days.

How we protect your data

We take reasonable steps to protect the security of your family's information. All data is encrypted in transit using TLS 1.3 and at rest using AES-256. Access to our production systems requires multi-factor authentication, and all access is recorded in an audit log. Device firmware and app updates are cryptographically signed so they can only come from our servers.

That said, no system connected to the internet is completely secure, and we can't guarantee the security of information you transmit to us. If you have concerns, please reach out.

California residents

If you are a California resident, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) gives you additional rights regarding your personal information, including the right to know and access what we collect, the right to correct it or delete it, and the right to opt out of its sale or sharing. We do not sell or share personal information, and we do not use it for cross-context behavioral advertising, We collect only the limited information described in this policy. Much of what the device handles – including your child’s photos and live voice input - is processed transiently to provide the Services and is not retained by default.  We do not knowingly sell or share the personal information of consumers under 16.

To exercise your CCPA rights, please contact us at privacy@dex.camera.

How does Dex work?

After your child takes a photo, Dex uses AI recognition software to identify the object, then retrieve the relevant language lessons. By default, photos and audio are sent securely to our AI processing partner, used only to return the result, and then deleted right away – they’re never stored. Parents can only opt in to store audio to help us improve language teaching. Parents cannot choose to save the photos even if they want to. Audios are deleted after retention period.

How does Dex protect my child's data?

Protecting children's privacy is core to how Dex is built. We follow the requirements of COPPA, the U.S. children's privacy law: we get verifiable parental consent before your child uses Dex, we never use children's data for advertising or marketing, and by default we don't store photos or voice recordings — content is processed to give your child an answer and then deleted. You control what's saved.

Is Dex safe for my kids to use?

Safety is our priority. As parents ourselves, we built Dex with multiple layers of protection. Content passes through an automated filter that blocks known inappropriate words, an AI safety check, and human review of flagged content, all designed to catch inappropriate or harmful material. No automated system is perfect, so Dex is built for use with your involvement — you stay in control, and it's not meant for unsupervised play.
